Fraught with over obvious symbolism, Hartley's early feature is nonetheless a joy to watch. Hal here shows us his uncanny ability to cast his characters perfectly came early in his career. Adrienne Shelley is a near perfect foil to herself, equal parts annoying teen burgeoning in her sexuality (though using sex for several years); obsessed with doom and inspired by idealism gone wron雖然說豐臣公主根本就是寫給大阪人的情書，而且它有一個很棒的設定，但它真的就是個寫爛了的故事啊～～#電影更慘連僅有的立意都破壞掉了#看完只會讓人想去大阪玩而已#綾瀨遙你不要再跑了好嗎我都快要暈了g she is deceptively – and simultaneously – complex and simple. Her Audrey inspires so many levels of symbolism it is almost embarrassingly rich (e.g., her modeling career beginning with photos of her foot – culminating her doing nude (but unseen) work; Manhattan move; Europe trip; her stealing, then sleeping with the mechanics wrench, etc.) As Josh, Robert Burke gives an absolutely masterful performance. A reformed prisonerpenitent he returns to his home town to face down past demons, accept his lot and begin a new life. Dressed in black, and repeatedly mistaken for a priest, he corrects everyone (I'm a mechanic), yet the symbolism is rich he abstains from alcohol, he practices celibacy (is, in fact a virgin), and seemingly has taken on vows of poverty, and humility as well. The humility seems hardest to swallow seeming, at times, almost false, a pretense. Yet, as we learn more of Josh we see genuineness in his modesty, that his humility is indeed earnest and believable. What seems ironic is the character is fairly forthright in his simplicity, yet so richly drawn it becomes the viewer who wants to make him out as more than what he actually is. A fascinatingly written character, perfectly played. The scene between Josh and Jane (a wonderful, young Edie Falco . . . You need a woman not a girl) is hilarious . . . real. But Hartley can't leave it as such and his trick, having the actors repeat the dialogue over-and-over becomes frustratingly arty and annoying . . . until again it becomes hilarious. What a terrific sense of bizarre reality this lends the film (like kids in a perpetual am notare too argument). Hartley's weaves all of a small neighborhood's idiosyncrasies into a tapestry of seeming stereotypes but which delves far beneath the surface, the catalyst being that everyone believes they know what the unbelievable truth of the title is, yet no two people can agree (including our hero) on what exactly that truth is. A wonderful little movie with some big ideas.

我觉得所谓的克苏鲁电影就是导演和编剧自己也说不清讲个啥，因此后半段的梦境过于迷离跳脱
高潮在哪？？而且最烦人的就是铺垫不够，或者说导演故意隐瞒了很多东西，不让我们看到

豆瓣电影影评：我其实是想给难以置信的事实4颗星的，但是稍微回味了一会儿，觉得它不值，还是三星半吧。其实，我一向对香港欧美剧非常宽容，甚至可以大言不惭的说，在国内和国际制作水平差距极大的情况下，我就是“双标”——都不在一个起跑线上，根本没法比呀。所以经常出现国外影片堪堪尚可，我却只给三星及格，香港欧美剧只是稍微拍出了一点点好看，我就会给三星及以上，如果演员演技爆炸或者剧本极佳，我也不会吝啬我的5星，但是如果按照给国外影片打分的标准，这些香港欧美剧可能通通都只能有三四颗星以下。
